Women Praying in Mosques

Assalamu Alaikum,
Muslim Women prayed in Prophets mosqueSometime back we had a discussion about sisters in the mosque at ummah.com forum. It was an interesting discussion with brothers and sisters from different areas expressing their views. This blog post is a result of that discussion plus some information from a little research.

Strange as it may seem to many, women praying in Mosques is nothing new to Islam. In the early days of Islam mosques were just as open to women as it was for men because the mosque is for Muslims, men and women, to worship our Creator. Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) said, “Do not stop the maid servants of Allah from going to the mosques of Allah." (Muwatta of Imam Malik) and, “When the wife of one of you asks about going to the mosque, do not stop her." (Bukhari). So it’s perfectly okay for women to attend prayers in the mosque if they wish to.

Today, owing to various reasons in many Muslim communities it has become the custom for only men go to the Mosque and women to pray at home, (except on special occasions such as Ramadan ‘Tarawee’ prayers and Eid festival prayers) This may have being fine until recently. But inline with Prophet’s Sunnah, due to many reasons we need to make our mosques accessible to women. The most important reason is for the convenience of women who are traveling, working and away from home and unable to get back home on time for prayers. It’s also important to make our mosques women friendly because it’s vital for dawah activities and helps new convert sisters to learn to pray and practice Islam not to mention it benefits them and new families to the area to get to know the local Muslim community. When a mosque accommodates women it also helps change negative stereotypes non-Muslims have about Islam. In addition this allows other beneficial activities like Islamic classes, tajweed classes etc. to be setup for women. The modern world is so tantalizing it’s very easy to forget the hereafter and get engrossed in this temporary worldly life. In this environment it is vital our Muslim women and in turn our children are fully included in our mosques to be sure that our next generation understands and follows Islam as it was truly taught by Prophet Muhammad (pbuh).

Though one might think we need to rebuild mosques, actually for women to pray in the mosques they don’t necessarily have to have their own section. The only separation between men and women in the mosque is during prayers when women must stand behind the men. In Prophet’s mosque women occupied the back rows and could be seen and heard by the rest of the congregation. Ibn Abaas (ra) said: "Once the Prophet came out (for the 'Eid prayers) as if I were just observing him waving to the people to sit down. He then, accompanied by Bilal, came crossing the rows till he reached the women. He recited verse 12 of chapter 60 to them and asked: 'O ladies, are you fulfilling your covenant?' None except one woman said 'Yes'. The Prophet then said: 'Then give sadaqah.' Bilal (ra) then spread his garment and said 'Keep on giving alms'. (Bukhari)

The Prophet’s open main space mosque will be the ideal but I think due to privacy and other concerns it’s best to have a women’s area or at least some sort of a covering separating part of the praying area of the mosque for women.

Today in non-Muslim countries a mosque must definitely accommodate women, preferably with a women’s prayer area and other facilities. However many mosques in these countries are small and converted properties so it is understandable if a women’s area is not provided immediately for obviously maximizing the space for men is important because unlike women it’s mandatory for men to attend Friday prayers (though at other times a movable curtain or panel would allow women to use the mosque). But a purpose built mosque should definitely include a women’s area.

Fortunately many mosques, especially in western countries have begun to address this need. However I hear in some cases they are tiny rooms and basements with a leaky roof and a bad smell! I know this is not the case everywhere but this type of situation should never occur. For men or women mosques should be a place of refuge where your mind can be at ease from worldly affairs. If a Mosque has or plans to have a women’s area it need not be as big as men’s area but every step should be taken to ensure it is equal in facilities and other aspects to the rest of the Mosque and maintained accordingly. Getting the opinions of women in that community and making sure their requirements are met will also ensure pleasant and practical facilities are provided.

And when building a new mosque or arranging a women’s prayer area it’s important to have women’s participation. This will make sure the best possible is available to women and avoid many difficulties and complaints later on. Also women must ask for mosque facilities/activities if they are not provided. Because sometimes it is unlikely anything will be provided unless there is a demand.

So if anyone knows of any mosque being built in their area or nearby, get involved with it (e.g. like helping raise funds etc.) This is a great rewardable action and at the same time puts you in a position to influence the decisions and push for a women’s area. For existing mosques it would certainly help to discuss with the management and create awareness in the community for a suitable arrangement for women.

Jazakallah for alerting me about that post, it certainly interests me.

Regarding the images I share your concern. Sometime back I was averse to imagery but someone I respect told me images with figures (properly dressed ones ofcourse ;) are okay but it's drawing figures that's haram. I don't know about any fatwa and since many Islamic religious websites (e.g. www.islamalways.com, www.islamonline.net and Harun Yahya's sites use images) I too use proper images to compliment what I write and I think the once here are ok because those girls and ladies have dressed properly. However I would be thankful to anyone if they can direct me to a fatwa or scholarly article/s regarding images and Islam.

wa3aleykum asalam wa rahmat Allahi wa barakatuhu..

jazana wa eyak ill be waiting for your comments,,

regrading the pictures on your blog, i dont believe the women are covered properly at all,
a hijab must not be
1- shaping a womans body
2- showin skin colour/transparent
3- a clothing of fame- isnt exotic/catches attention.
4- an ornament in itself
5-imitate what men wear
6-imitate what kafirat wear

the women in the pics, their bodies can be shaped and their hijabs are ornaments in themselves
i do not disaprove of (photographic) pictures all together as some scholars do
but I do to our specific case.

i am aware of what islamonline does, in fact i use to work with them, and i have friends there. yet still what they do is unacceptable, and what others do is not evidence to anything Islamic or not.

in fact according to sheikh Ali Juma ( now mufti of Egypt) and i was there when he said it, that salat of a woman is Awra, i.e should not be seen by men.
so either ways if they were fully covered ( obviously wothout hands and face for salat) still we should not take pictures of them that men can see..

and even if they were not praying
then Allah commands us to lower our gaze regardless of what the women are waering even if they are in full niqab basically becuase it is purer for our hearts

as Allah says. in surat an-nur

30] Say to the believing men that they should lower their gaze and guard their modesty: that will make for greater purity for them: and Allah is well acquainted with all that they do.

[31] And say to the believing women that they should lower their gaze and guard their modesty; that they should not display their beauty and ornaments.

that even includes lowering gaze when talking to a female and not making eye contact due to the generality of the ayah, it could be tough at first and mainting it is tough
but its purer for the heart

may Allah grant us purity in our hearts and give us the sucess to maintain it..

jazaka Allahu khairan,

Assalaamu alaikum wa rahmat allah.
MashaAllah, I was pleasantly surprised to read the commentss of a fellow Sri Lankan Muslim in the blog of Al Hanbali.
May Allah azza wa jal guide you to Sirath al musthakeem and aid you to leve the land of the Kuffar to the land of the muslims. Aameen yaa rabb al aalameen.
I wonder if you are aware of the hadeeth of the prophet where it says the best place for a women to worship is the darkest corner of her room. As a female I firmly beleive it is the most comfortable place to pray.
However where the eid prayer is concerned the women is commanded/encouraged to join the salah in the musallah. That too provided she is covered appropriately (says even if she has to borrow the outer covering - the jilbaab) then she goes for the eid salaah.
May Allah tabaraka wa ta'alaa increase you in knowledge and grant you hikmah. Aameen.
Wassalaam.

Wa'alaikum Salam Sister,
I am very happy to hear from a Sri Lankan Muslim in my blog. I've heard that hadeeth and I totally agree with you, for a woman/girl, her home is the best and most comfortable place to pray.

But I think you missed my point. My objective from this post/article is NOT to question which place is the most suitable for women to pray, but to create awareness and in turn towards ensuring the necessary arrangements are there IF and WHEN a woman wants to use the mosque for salaath. I think as Sri Lankan mosques don't have ladies area's you yourself would have found it difficult at times to pray on time, e.g when your traveling or if your working in a city, or office etc. When traveling for males, if they want to pray, they can stop the vehicle and go and pray while women stay behind inside the vehicle. This has happened to me many times when I travel with my mother, sisters and aunts.

aid you to leave the land of the Kuffar to the land of the muslims.

Alhamdulillah, I think I am blessed to live in a non-Muslim country, because it gives me more opportunity to do Dawah and propagate Islam.

take care,
Malik

I really enjoyed the article and links to other articles on allowing women access to the mainspace and not having a wall or a partition. I have been researching Islam for a long time now and am thinking about converting. After doing a lot of reading and studying, I finally attended my first mosque. I had spoken with a girlfriend of mine who had recently converted from Christianity as well. She talked to me about women and Islam and the reason for covering the hair, etc and the separation in the mosque. As a very independent woman, I was surprised how much it made sense to me but it did.

However, when I went to the mosque, I saw the "main" entrance and then I saw a door on the side that said "women's entrance." I wouldn't have minded if there were two doors in the front--one for MEN and one for WOMEN. But separating the women specifically bothered me a little I must say. When I went inside, there was a room for the women with speakers and a tinted window into the main facility where the prayers took place. In all honesty, I didn't like that at all.

I decided to visit another local mosque to see if it was unique to that one. It was a little better but it had curtains up and the women were lined up on the wall and couldn't even see inside the main part where the imam was speaking. This was all very unsettling. I started second guessing the direction I was headed.

I guess my question is why can't women sit next to men? I understand the need for separation but why can't this be accomplished with women sitting on one side and men on the other? Why do they need to be behind the men? From everything I've learned, I think Islam is a beautiful religion and I feel at peace with all that I've been taught up until this point. That is, everything except this. If the point is to ensure that both men and women concentrate and not be distracted by the opposite sex, why can't that be accomplished through a less unqualizing measure?

I'd love someone to provide some insight. I can't seem to get pass this.

Thinking About Converting,
Hello,
Sorry for the belated reply, I couldn't check my blog in the past few days. Thank you for sharing your views and experience here. I am very happy to hear about your interest in Islam.

Coming to your question, I can understand your concern about the requiremet for women to pray behind men in mosques. I think it's best if you can meet a knowledgable Muslim and discuss it. Your friend or someone in the mosques you visited might be able to direct you to such a person. Also I think at this stage you need to study and think about the core aspects of Islam like, the concept of God in Islam (Allah), the purpose of life, concept of worship, prophethood etc. You see, as I am convinced that, there is no God but Allah and Prophet Muhammad is the messenger of Allah, I accept everything Allah and his prophet told us to do in Islam and do my best to follow them.

I guess my question is why can't women sit next to men? I understand the need for separation but why can't this be accomplished with women sitting on one side and men on the other? Why do they need to be behind the men?
It's because the prophet of Allah showed us this is correct way for men and women to pray in mosques, and Allah and his prophet knows best.

Assalamu Alaikum 'Unite Muslim' and 'thinking about converting'. I think your answer is correct Unite Muslim....one of the benefits of women standing behind the men is that the Masjid is the place where a person goes to to worship and busy himself with his Creator and worshipping Him. He needs his heart to be pure and if the women were directly in front of the Imam or the men, then:
1. It would be a distraction for the men. Scientifically, the effect on a man of looking at a woman is much more powerful than the effect on a woman when she looks at a man. So men may become preoccupied when they see women. Islam wants to prevent that from even occuring.

2. Women can relax more if they are behind the men, because the men act as a barrier for them and the men are facing forwards, so if a woman whats to adjust her hijab or breastfeed discretely or whatever, she doesn't hesitate. She can chat to her friends and will feel more at ease.

3. Some of the prayer sections for women are smaller, and of course women should have a section in mosques and it should be nice....but the fact is that Allah has not made prayer in congregation at the Mosque obligatory on women. And that is truly a blessing for us women! Because I assure you that when you have a home and children it would be extremely difficult to go out for every prayer, and Allah has made that easy for us women by lifting the burden off us.

4. Lastly...yes...look at the proofs and see how the Qur'an is indeed a message from the Creator...the Scientific facts in it, its clarity, its message...it could only be from God...Look at the Prophet (Peace be upon him) and his amazing life and character and his link to the messengers of the past...he too could only have been made a messenger by God...if you accept those two things....then everything they came with is for our own benefit and everything they warned us against is bad for us...so we accept that.

In addition for Moslem women to have a friendly atmosphere in mosques I would like to see all women mosques to be established where women have total control including Friday Khutba and being director and Imam.

I truly believe that we have reached the point where technology has become one with our lives, and I can say with 99% certainty that we have passed the point of no return in our relationship with technology.

I don't mean this in a bad way, of course! Ethical concerns aside... I just hope that as technology further develops, the possibility of uploading our memories onto a digital medium becomes a true reality. It's a fantasy that I daydream about every once in a while.
